What is Krlock Ransomware
Krlock Ransomware is a data locking malware that belongs to MedusaLocker Ransomware Family. Although there is no major modification noticed in the Krlock Ransomware as compared to previous variants, it can cause massive destruction. It uses nasty AES and RSA Encryption techniques that makes the data inaccessible by and large. The files are held hostage and then the platform is set for the hackers to demand ransom from the innocent victims. The demanded ransom is in exchange for a decryption tool which is required to unlock and decrypt the locked data file and to restore them back. It is seen that locked files will have .Krlock as file extension. All the locked files will get appended with this new file extension and as such the renamed file is rendered useless. Suppose the original image file with the name 1.jpg will get renamed to 1.jpg.krlock as file extension. This is all done to encrypt the files of the victims. It is never easy to cope with Krlock Ransomware attacks as one cannot modify the files or rename it to its original extension. This ransomware hit the cyber world in the Wild and is closely similar to other variants of MeduasaLocker Ransomware such as L54 Ransomware.

Soon thereafter it drops the ransom note as ‘Recovery_Instructions.html’ as a ransom message. It bears all the information besides a strict warning to victims that they must avoid any recovery options or third party tools to recover encrypted data as it will lead to permanent damage and deletion of the files. There is no other way to recover data other than a decryption tool which can be only released by hackers of Krlock Ransomware. The ransom note further bears information of email ids of hackers [email protected] and [email protected] that can be used for contacting the hackers before paying the ransom to them. However in order to establish a contact they need to visit server hosted using TOR Network also seen in the case of TOR Ransomware. It is also mentioned that victims can attach up to 3 encrypted or locked files that are to be decrypted as a free trial just to confirm that all the files will get restored if the ransom is paid to hackers. To prevail a sense of urgency, hackers have come up with the stipulated deadline for the victims to pay the ransom within 72 hours of the attack. If they fail to pay the ransom within this stipulated time period, the ransom amount will be increased. So this creates a sense of urgency and many of the victims proceed towards ransom payment within 72 hours of attack.
